Welcome, and thank you for visiting Firefighter Self Rescue!  It is my hope that this site will help those of us in Firefighting and in other service fields to think differently about how we train ourselves for the work we do.  Take some time to look through the videos, and please comment!  I welcome feedback, and I hope this space can also be a place for discussion of the work we do!

Help Me Celebrate My Birthday!

Posted in Choices, Education, Family, Inspirational People, Leadership, Life and Lifestyle, Relationships with tags , , , , , , on September 5, 2012 by firefighterselfrescue

On 9/20/12, I’m turning 36. And this year, I don’t want presents or drinks. I want clean water.

Women and children in Rwanda walk for hours every day, up and down mountains, just to collect water from rivers. And the worst part? The water they collect can make them really sick.

Terrible right? Well, we can actually do something about it. Just $65 can give someone in Rwanda clean water.

So I’m asking everyone for my age in donations. Give $36 or $360 or any amount that you can afford and help me give life’s most basic need.

The best part is that 100% of the money we raise will directly fund water projects in the Rwanda, and when those projects are complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the impact we made. I can’t think of a better birthday gift. Join me!

Please watch all videos and be inspired like I was!

Thank you! Please click this link to donate!

Calm assertiveness = command presence

This is kind of a different subject for me. I heard about Ceaser Millan from a story that Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book “What the Dog Saw”. I became interested in his story and how he uses human behavior to help rehabilitate dogs. I read his book that’s called “caesar’s Way” and I’ve also watched numerous episodes of his show “The Dog Whisper”. I think we all need to be working on our own calm assertiveness.

I’m always talking about innovation and how awful the fire service is at it!  Here is a short video that I think gives a real good idea to help.  Please let me know if any of you implement this!

Are you Delivering Happiness?

I took on a little project at work which included upgrading our library at our training department.  I decided to write to all of my favorite authors.  I got a great response. One author/company really delivered a WOW factor…I talk about it in this video!  It’s Tony Hsieh is the CEO of Zappos.com if you are not aware of them than you are probably living under a rock!  They also have another great site called Deliveringhappiness.com and you can order some more fantastic items from here.  Anyways, there are a couple of main points that I want to talk about in the video…Customer service and Culture.

Six Step Transformational Conversations

Posted in Leadership on March 24, 2012 by firefighterselfrescue

I have decided to start posting information to you guys that comes from other people and other sites. Information that I feel is valuable! There are a number of blogs on leadership, professional development, education etc. When I read one that I really think provides some value to you guys, I’m going to share it here! I have received permission from these fantastic writers too!

The first one that I would like to introduce you to is Dan Rockwell a.k.a. The Leadership Freak. I’ve been enjoying Dan’s work for over a year now. I encourage you to visit his site and sign up. You will receive a daily email from him where you can read his latest blog. They all have to do with leadership!

Recently Dan wrote a fantastic piece titled “Six Step Transformational Conversations”. It started off with a quote that really hit home with me and goes right along with a lot of my past videos. It says “Many people who could have made the biggest difference in my life didn’t”…WOW! That’s powerful! The questions that follow that powerful quote are just as powerful! Please take the time to read it and please leave a comment here to start the discussion! I hope you enjoy Dan’s blog as much as I have!

"Stop Stealing Dreams"

Posted in Education with tags , , , , on March 5, 2012 by firefighterselfrescue

I always knew that I disliked the way our education system has been set up. I just never knew what I could do about it…Until now! Seth Godin has written a 98 page manuscript called “Stop Stealing Dreams” and it is AWESOME! Please take the time to go to this link and download your FREE copy of this ebook. Please also pass it along to any parent and educator you know! Here’s a quick video that has some more of my thoughts on it.
