Help Me Celebrate My Birthday!

Posted in Choices, Education, Family, Inspirational People, Leadership, Life and Lifestyle, Relationships with tags , , , , , , on September 5, 2012 by firefighterselfrescue

On 9/20/12, I’m turning 36. And this year, I don’t want presents or drinks. I want clean water.

Women and children in Rwanda walk for hours every day, up and down mountains, just to collect water from rivers. And the worst part? The water they collect can make them really sick.

Terrible right? Well, we can actually do something about it. Just $65 can give someone in Rwanda clean water.

So I’m asking everyone for my age in donations. Give $36 or $360 or any amount that you can afford and help me give life’s most basic need.

The best part is that 100% of the money we raise will directly fund water projects in the Rwanda, and when those projects are complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the impact we made. I can’t think of a better birthday gift. Join me!

Please watch all videos and be inspired like I was!

Thank you! Please click this link to donate!

Calm assertiveness = command presence

This is kind of a different subject for me. I heard about Ceaser Millan from a story that Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book “What the Dog Saw”. I became interested in his story and how he uses human behavior to help rehabilitate dogs. I read his book that’s called “caesar’s Way” and I’ve also watched numerous episodes of his show “The Dog Whisper”. I think we all need to be working on our own calm assertiveness.

Are you Delivering Happiness?

I took on a little project at work which included upgrading our library at our training department.  I decided to write to all of my favorite authors.  I got a great response. One author/company really delivered a WOW factor…I talk about it in this video!  It’s Tony Hsieh is the CEO of if you are not aware of them than you are probably living under a rock!  They also have another great site called and you can order some more fantastic items from here.  Anyways, there are a couple of main points that I want to talk about in the video…Customer service and Culture.

Start Something…

I just finished reading Blake Mycoskie’s “Start Something That Matters” and I wanted to give you my take on it. I know that I’ve talked about him and his company Toms shoes in another video, but the book had some really good points that I wanted to mention.

Well today is 9/11 and I really don’t have any of the usual tips for you on leadership or human development. I saw this story a few months back on ESPN’s show E60
I have a son who was born on 9/11…not 2001 but 2005. It was after he was born that I got into the fire service. So happy birthday to him! I just wanted to give my take on our local hero who if she was still alive; this would have been her 10th birthday!

Clay Gould…Why not me?

Posted in Inspirational People on June 23, 2011 by firefighterselfrescue

Today is June 23rd; and it’s the ten year anniversary of the passing of Clay Gould.  Most of you have no idea who Clay Gould is.  I only know who he was because I used to coach college baseball and it’s a small community.  His story is so inspiring that I knew when I started this web site; that at some point I would be doing a video on him and his story for the inspirational people category.   I can only hope that when I realize that my time is up…I can be as courageous and as inspiring as he was at the end of his life!

Clay Gould left an amazing legacy...what legacy are you going to leave?

Celebration of Pat Tillman

Posted in Inspirational People on April 22, 2011 by firefighterselfrescue

Today’s video is on a real Hero!  Pat Tillman was a safety who played for Arizona State University before being drafted to play for the Arizona Cardinals.  After the attacks of September 11, 2001, he walked away from his multi-million dollar sports career to join the United States Army Rangers and serve his country in Afghanistan.  He was killed by friendly fire on active duty in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004, and his death was the subject of a major scandal and cover-up by the U.S. military.  To learn more about Pat and the events surrounding his service and death, check out this article from Sports Illustrated.

After his death, his wife founded the Pat Tillman Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing resources and educational scholarship support to veterans, active servicemembers and their dependents.  For seven years now, the Pat Tillman Foundation has hosted Pat’s Run, a 4.2 miles race that raises funds for the foundation.  I had the incredible fortune to participate in the race this year, and this week’s video is a reflection of that experience and of Pat’s legacy.
