Help Me Celebrate My Birthday!

Posted in Choices, Education, Family, Inspirational People, Leadership, Life and Lifestyle, Relationships with tags , , , , , , on September 5, 2012 by firefighterselfrescue

On 9/20/12, I’m turning 36. And this year, I don’t want presents or drinks. I want clean water.

Women and children in Rwanda walk for hours every day, up and down mountains, just to collect water from rivers. And the worst part? The water they collect can make them really sick.

Terrible right? Well, we can actually do something about it. Just $65 can give someone in Rwanda clean water.

So I’m asking everyone for my age in donations. Give $36 or $360 or any amount that you can afford and help me give life’s most basic need.

The best part is that 100% of the money we raise will directly fund water projects in the Rwanda, and when those projects are complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the impact we made. I can’t think of a better birthday gift. Join me!

Please watch all videos and be inspired like I was!

Thank you! Please click this link to donate!

You will stand out from the crowd when you smile!

Smiling is such an underrated tool these days.  When we are here with the purpose of attracting people for whatever reason (to motivate, move to action, date us or sell them something, etc.) smiling is the first thing that you want to start with…and not some forced cheesy smile.  I’m talking about a real crows feet in your eyes type of smile!  In his book Enchantment; Guy Kawasaki says “What does it cost to smile?  Nothing.  What does it cost to not smile?  EVERYTHING!”

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Firefighter Self Rescue!  It is my hope that this site will help those of us in Firefighting and in other service fields to think differently about how we train ourselves for the work we do.  Take some time to look through the videos, and please comment!  I welcome feedback, and I hope this space can also be a place for discussion of the work we do!

Am I Right?

Every person regardless of race, gender, age, or anything else has something in common.  We all think we’re right.  It’s time for us to question that assumption.

Are You Part of the Problem?

Posted in Relationships on February 17, 2011 by firefighterselfrescue

It is so easy to get defensive when someone is talking bad about you!  Your first reaction far too often is to assume they don’t know what they’re talking about.  After all, you know you’re a great person, right?  Perhaps a better reaction, though, is to look inside and wonder, “Am I doing something that would make that person feel that way?  Am I part of the problem?”

Be Nice!!

Posted in Relationships on February 16, 2011 by firefighterselfrescue

One of the things that I have the hardest time with in life is simply being nice to people, but it is one of the most important things that we can do in our relationships!  Kindness is vitally important as we hope to be better Firefighters and better people.
